A website
is a collection of web pages which may contain images,
videos or other assets.
It is
hosted on a web server and accessible via the Internet, or
via other devices such as mobile phones or PDA (personal
desktop assistant) devices. A web page is a document written
in HTML (Hypertext markup language) and is accessed by a
program called a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or
FireFox.
All
publicly accessible websites collectively make up what is
known as the 'World Wide Web'.
There are
three categories of software for editing websites:
Text
editors can be used and this involves directly manipulating
the HTML code by hand, so you have to be well up on your
code to edit this way.
Alternatively you can use any of a number of WYSIWYG (what
you see is what you get) editors. These can offer
convenience and functionality to the user, making web design
and editing faster and easier. Examples include Macromedia
Dreamweaver or Microsoft Frontpage, developed by two of the
largest corporations out there, so this software always
remains cutting edge.
There are
also hundreds of freeware and shareware editors that can do
just as good a job. Web editing software sites will provide
reviews and recommendations of these packages.
There are
also template-based editors which allow the end-user to
quickly create and upload websites without touching HTML.
You just pick from a template and add your content to it.
You can
expand the functionality of your website by adding plugins.
Some of these plugins such as Flash, Shockwave or Java can
considerably improve the look and feel of your website and
add features such as music / image / video players, games,
shopping carts or various other functions.
There are
many different types of website out there, dictionaries,
shops, content sites, databases, download sites, game sites,
news sites, humour, rating or review sites.
Website
creation and editing can go as deep as you want it to, or
you can keep things simple and let your content do the
talking. It's up to you.
Our
website will be live soon.
